Monton Village Fete ( 2009)

I've been intending for some weeks to take some more photo's of Monton Village, where I live in Salford, to post on here. Last Saturday, 4th July, was our yearly village summer festival/fete, so it was an ideal opportunity.

I decided to throw all these photo's into a slide show to make them easier to view.

It starts with a view over the canal bridge (near my home), goes past Monton Green and into Monton Road (the village's high street) where most of the stalls were located, and including the occasional view backwards, back up the other side of Monton Road towards Monton Green again (note the village church's spire just visible above the trees), then around Monton Green itself where the (mainly?) kiddies entertainment was located.

Obviously, like most YouTube videos, it's best viewed in HQ and Full Screen.

Quite nice.

I'm not "into" fetes and carnivals, and avoid them like the plague.

Our local carnival (Earl Shilton) was abandoned this year because Browns Stormtroopers (Police Force) wanted too much money to provide protection against the forces of evil, and for directing the errant motorists away from the parade.

The whole idea of a carnival is to raise money for charity; not to line the pockets of the stormtroopers! So the local charities lost out.

As I said, I don't attend fetes etc., but I think they should have the police escort for nothing and that would be the police's contribution to the charity.

Sorry to "pee on your parade" (pun intended!), but I feel strongly about people profiteering from these events.

Hi again Keith. As usual there's some good points in there.

Fortunately it's not a full scale carnival here. You can see anyway from the traffic in the pics that a carnival procession would be a non-starter.

No, it's a very much smaller scale festival/fete style offering here, which also (partly thanks to volunteer marshals) probably doesn't need a contracted Police presence as such - though they did have a well-manned recruitment stand, and the local community police (all three of them?) seemed to be everywhere at once mingling in with the crowds.

Our yearly village festival/fete is organised by the local village community association, and not by the 'Round Table', 'Rotary Club', or similar, as it is in many towns.

The stalls (with the exception of a couple of local artists) were all representing either charitable or non-profit organisations. (However, this is one Saturday in the year when the local shops don't close early due to lack of custom!).

A proportion of the (very small!) profit made goes into the local community association to be spent towards the cost of such things as the upkeep of the Village Green, the plants and flower borders around the village, the Christmas Lights - and even the Christmas Tree!, in fact anything over and above the local Council's meagre provisions that will enhance the visual appearance of the village not only to the benefit of the local residents but also the visitors to the preservation area - which includes the Village Green, the Church, other buildings of historic interest, and the local section of the Bridgewater Canal.

Besides, we always want to be 'one up' on our neighbouring village of Worsley. (Think of in your area an equivalent of the 1960's villages of Wolvey and Bulkington perhaps?).

Bulkington? Poo, I've seen better looking slums in Africa that that!

I've answered your comment about the morse key on my blog, sorry, journal.

just stumbled upon your lovely blog looking for Monton's website. You say your neighbouring village is Worsley? I thought it was Winton, and Worsley neigboured Winton? Looking to move to the area and trying to get my head around it.

Worsley is actually just the other side of the golf course from Monton. Or a very pleasant 20 mins walk along the Bridgewater Canal footpath. But by car then yes you would pass through the top end of Winton.

(Maybe it could be simplified by building a road across the golf course? Only joking!).
